Community Spotlight: Georgetown

Georgetown

Whether it’s a Federal row-house, a Georgian townhome or a condo overlooking the Potomac River, Georgetown offers convenient and chic living in Washington DC’s most architecturally preserved neighborhood.

The political party in power in the White House may change, but for Washington DC's Georgetown neighborhood, the patina of wealth and stability remains constant. Founded in 1751 as part of Colonial Maryland and fully consolidated into the nation's capital in 1871, Georgetown sits along the northern shore of the Potomac River.  The neighborhood is known primarily for its historic and charming 18th century vintage townhouses along quaint cobblestone streets, for a lively mix of trendy restaurants and upscale chain stores centered at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and M Street and for its resident power brokers.

While Washington's Metrorail bypasses the neighborhood, with the closest subway station (Foggy Bottom - GWU) about one mile from the commercial core, Georgetown is blessed with abundant acres of parkland.  These include Georgetown Waterfront Park, with its boating facilities and bike paths and Dumbarton Oaks Park to the north. Georgetown University, with an enrollment of just under 5,000 students, is situated to the west of the neighborhood.

Georgetown is characterized largely by attached townhouses which are typically priced in the range of $700,000 - $7,000,000, and which in some cases are over two hundred years old.  Though these townhomes are nearly eponymous, there are other real estate configurations available. Much of the neighborhood is within a federally-recognized historical district which restricts demolition and preserves the character of residential and commercial structures, even as their purpose changes.  Georgetown is generally considered the District’s second priciest, just below tony Kalorama.

With a population of about 31,000, nearby school options and high-end shopping and dining make Georgetown ideal for everyone.  Stores along Wisconsin Avenue and M Street include multi-brand boutiques like relish, Lynn Louisa and Cusp, upscale chain stores such as rag & bone, AllSaints, Club Monaco and Intermix and home showrooms, Waterworks and Thomas Pheasant.  Georgetown’s walkability factor is among the highest of Washington DC’s neighborhoods, with retail and cultural venues in close proximity to many homes.
